Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition in which the entire upper airway is block causing air flow to stop. Sleep apnea is highly correlated with an increase in heart attacks, CHF, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, excessive daytime sleepiness, GERD, glucose intolerance, obesity, diabetes, auto accidents, cancer, and impotence. The most common signs and symptoms include: snoring, daytime sleepiness, and hypertension or high blood pressure. As physicians of the head and neck we feel it is important to screen all patients for sleep apnea. A proper diagnosis and treatment can save a patient an average of 10 years of their life and lead to a better quality of life.
